Malteses you might have seen at shows or with celebrities on TV are gorgeous and really far from a rescue type Maltese. They are not young dogs (ranging from 4 to 10 years), they have some health problems, and their coat is not so silky and snow white as you may have imagined. Many of rescue Malteses are overweight and have some temperamental problems.
Malteses that show up in rescues are often from puppy mills or backyard breeders and part of the responsibility for these dogs lies on them. However, purebred dogs could have been abandoned by their families, if their lifestyles have undergone some changes and there is no way they can keep the dog.
If you are planning to become a pet owner, consider adopting a Maltese Dog. With all the above-mentioned possible handicaps, there are obvious advantages in owning a Maltese. Malteses are cute and their lively temperament tends to prepossess everyone in their favor. Very playful and affectionate, these little dogs are said to have a lion's heart. Malteses are too small to be guard dogs, but they are brave enough to make excellent watchdogs. Perfect for an apartment living, the Maltese does well with older children and will be your happy companion wherever you go. Malteses require much attention, but you will never regret the time and attention you shared with these intelligent little dogs.

Malteses Information - Maltese Dogs are part of the toy group of dogs. Their whole appearance suggests a nice neat fluffy toy. The compact body is well proportioned. The Maltese Dog's white coat hangs almost to the ground, presenting a veil of silky fur.
The other name the Maltese Dog is known by is the Bichon Maltiase. This traces us to the fact that the Maltese belongs to the Bichon family and is regarded as a very ancient dog breed.
Malteses Pictures - Malteses have once been called the Maltese Lion Dog. Indeed, their "mane" of silky hair and brave little hearts bear some resemblance of these graceful animals. However, this is a very remote resemblance, for the standard size of the Maltese is 10 inches and it weighs 4-6 pounds.
Malteses have straight long hair, which hangs almost to the ground if unclipped. The color of the coat is white, although slight lemon or tan markings on the ears are acceptable. The ears are low set and feathered with thick hair.

The Maltese's body is relatively long with a level top line. According to the standard, the Maltese should weigh from 4 to 6 pounds. The Maltese stands 10 inches in height.
