Maltese Dogs are a wonderful breed and as it is a companion dog, many owners are not interested in papers and pedigrees. On the one hand, any Maltese that meets the standard's requirements, may be registered with the AKC. On the other hand, the papers do not guarantee that the registered puppy will not experience any health problems and will show no deviations from the standard later on.

Pedigree serves as a simple record of your Maltese's ancestors. It gives you enough information to see if the Maltese you are planning to buy has award winners and champions in his line. If you are buying from a responsible breeder, several generations pedigree and every piece of written evidence that the litter is healthy will be given to you by the breeder. Responsible breeders will not only answer all your questions about the Maltese breed, grooming, health risks, training, etc., but will be very selective with prospective Maltese owners. They will ask you about the conditions that are provided for the dog, the time that you are ready to spend with the Maltese, the attitude of your family members to the responsibility of dog ownership, etc.
Provided the Maltese is a high maintenance dog and its wonderful long hair needs brushed on a daily basis, it is not the right breed for those who would rather have a shorthaired or smooth dog breed. Buying a Maltese puppy just for looks is very undesirable, and hopefully, responsible breeder will prevent you from committing yourself to something you are not aware of. He will question you on your lifestyle and your plans, as there are sad cases when changes in lifestyle or attitude of the owner result in dramatic changes in the dog's life.
The Maltese is a family-oriented dog, and is not supposed to wait for the owner's attention. Malteses do well in apartment environment, if daily walks are provided.
